Superliga Weekend Results
Having played 2 full 90 minute games this weekend, this weekend warrior is worn thin. Saturday I sacrificed watching the Auburn-LSU game for traveling to Nashville to play in a superliga match where we battled with....another team from Huntsville! However, most of our squad (Schurke) was made up of players from the Nashville area. 4 or 5 of our normal men's league players were present and the rest was a hodge podge of recently graduated college players and older (but wiser) ex college and semi-pro players. The pace at the onset of the game was frenetic, but Schurke was able to find the net early and take control of the game. Deploying a 4-3-3 allowed us to exploit rocket city on the wings to create chances. At the half Schurke found itself holding a tenuous 2-1 lead. Minutes into the second Schurke managed to net two quick goals and then held on for dear life as wave after wave of attacks were thwarted by the stingy defense and superb play of Jay Black in the goal. All in all it was a fun experience as I managed to play as a marking back as opposed to my normal sweeper play. I prefer the outside because you get to attack more and it's a simpler position to play. You have a man and you mark him... a pretty simple black and white position. Next Superliga games are in two weeks. We host the Nashville Lions out at Jack Allen. I'm looking forward to playing on those fields again.
The hangover from the win carried over to Sunday and unfortunately Schurke didn't find itself so lucky on Sunday, only mustering 11 players and going down one player 15 minutes into the game. A heartbreaking defeat on a PK and muffed corner kick clearance found Schurke falling to 2-0. It was a bit of a let down after being able to beat Rocket City. Hope to get home tonight and update the other score and details from the Law Dogs-Nashville lions game. I do know that the Law Dogs came out on top with a 3-2 victory. ¼/p>
